POLLOCK: How Lee Krasner Built His Legacy Details
This e-book tells the inside story of how Jackson Pollock became recognized as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. The book describes in detail how key decisions were made in the early 1960s by Pollock’s widow, Lee Krasner, to build his reputation. The author and art historian James T. Valliere was the first person to work with Lee Krasner on this vast and ultimately successful project. His interviews with Pollock’s contemporaries, including artist Willem de Kooning, have been featured in many publications and books. All of these interviews are in the Archives of American Art.

An interesting footnote in the history of art but by no means a must to read or a great piece of literature. James Valliere was obviously a very intelligent student and a good scholar. He was fortunate to be at the right place and at the right moment in history to have this contact with Lee Krasner and to pursue his academic ambitions and her own personal ambitions. Krasner herself was an ambitious woman, dedicated to making Jackson Pollack famous and herself a legend and together, she and Valliere succeeded in doing so. The little book does gives one an appetite to visit East Hampton, the famous or infamous house where it all happened which has now been turned into a museum/library.Again, it is interesting to read the part James V. played in all of this but one gets the feeling that by writing this book, it is sort of a little ego trip and a bit of an exploitation of his relationship with Krasner but perhaps I am being too critical. In short though, I enjoyed reading this little tidbit of history since I too am an Art Historian.
